“She was nearly as strong as I”: Being Woman in the Workplace
August 8, 2018
With Panhandle Business and Professional Women at Scotts Bluff Country Club, 5014 Ave I, Scottsbluff, NE
Come to August meeting of the Panhandle Business and Professional Meeting for a special session on the life and work of Willa Cather. This is a great opportunity to learn more about Cather and about a vibrant women’s organization in Scottsbluff, NE.
My Ántonia follows the lives of many different women, who make different choices, and experience different professional or domestic lives. Lena Lingard becomes a seamstress, while Tiny Soderball runs a lodging house in Seattle and later at a gold-mining camp in Alaska. Ántonia remains near Black Hawk, eventually raising a large family of children on a farm. How have the lives of working women in Nebraska changed since Cather’s time? What echoes from My Ántonia can be found in today’s experiences as women?
